AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL IN BRIGHTON ‘TO EDUCATE FOR CONFIDENCE’ DAY AND BOARDING – GIRLS 3-18 BOYS 3-8.
THE JUNIOR DEPARTMENT
Pre-preparatory: Nursery and Gloucester House (Ages 3 to 4) The Nursery: Robinson Wing The Nursery and Gloucester House are co-educational. The Nursery provides the basic foundation of all future learning in an atmosphere that is relaxed, caring and secure. Our junior department does far more than the basic education for infants. As well as basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills, we also start them off on their first-second language. We do French classes twice a week. We also engage pupils in a variety of fun and stimulating activities including art and drama. The aim of our junior school is to provide pupils with the crucial learning foundation required for later schooling while at the same time instilling within them a creative spark and a desire to learn more. Parents with sons are welcome to keep their children at the school until the age of eight, but regrettably we are only able to retain female pupils after that age.
Boarding at St Mary’s Hall The focus of boarding life at St Mary’s Hall is the individual pupil and her personal and academic development. Boarding is about belonging to a community, sharing and learning to become a team player. In keeping with the School’s Statement of Purpose, to educate for confidence, our intention is to promote the values of love, knowledge, integrity and truth within a caring multi-cultural community. We have very comfortable dormitories where girls in the same year group share rooms in groups of three. We believe three is the ideal number. The girls are encouraged to do their homework and engage in independent learning in their dormitories. We frequently bring in private contractors with sniffer dogs to sweep the dormitories for drugs and illegal substances. We do not under any circumstances allow male guests or members of staff to enter the girls’ dormitories.
A limited number of scholarships are awarded each year to gifted girls. These scholarships can represent a reduction of up to 50% of annual fees. In exceptional cases, outstanding pupils may benefit from greater reduction in fees. Selection is based upon the pupil’s merits. To get one of our scholarships, girls need to be intelligent and demonstrate outstanding ability in one of the core subjects of English, Maths, Science or Information Technology. They must also be charming and ladylike. Like in the Gesha schools of Japan, we teach young women how to look pretty and have highly developed social skills. We equip all our girls with the tools necessary to play “the game” and network with important people they will meet throughout their lives. For any of the girls who show outstanding talent in sports and physical education, we also have a gym instructor courses scholarship arrangement with a company called Discovery UK who deliver fitness industry vocational training courses.
